HireVue - Talent Assessment & Video Interviewing platform

HireVue can ask a broader range of questions because employers can use it for video interviews, structured questions, assessments, and—in some setups—AI-led interviewing.

For a Senior Manager position, expect questions in these categories:

1. Behavioral questions

These are very common.

  • "Tell me about a time you faced a difficult challenge at work. How did you handle it?"
  • "Tell me about a time you had to manage conflicting priorities."
  • "Describe a situation where you disagreed with a stakeholder."
  • "Tell me about a time you made a difficult decision."
  • "Give an example of a mistake you made and what you learned from it."
  • "Tell me about a time you had to work under pressure."

Best approach: STAR — Situation, Task, Action, Result.

2. Leadership questions

  • "How would you describe your leadership style?"
  • "Tell me about a time you led a team through change."
  • "How do you motivate your team?"
  • "How do you deal with an underperforming team member?"
  • "Tell me about a time you influenced people without direct authority."
  • "How do you handle disagreements within your team?"

HireVue's structured interview approach allows employers to assess competencies relevant to the particular role, so the exact questions depend on the employer's interview design.

3. Digital transformation questions

  • "Tell me about a digital transformation project you led."
  • "How do you identify opportunities for digital improvement?"
  • "How do you ensure digital initiatives support business objectives?"
  • "Tell me about a time you introduced a new digital technology or platform."
  • "How do you manage resistance to digital transformation?"
  • "What makes a digital transformation successful?"

CMS migration / website modernization experience would be a strong story for these.

4. Customer experience questions

A Digital Manager is often expected to own the digital customer journey.

  • "How do you improve digital customer experience?"
  • "Tell me about a time you identified a customer pain point."
  • "How do you measure digital customer satisfaction?"
  • "Describe a time you improved an online customer journey."
  • "How would you identify where customers are dropping out of a digital journey?"

subscription and payment journey refresh would be an excellent example.

5. Data & analytics questions

  • "How do you use data to make decisions?"
  • "What digital KPIs do you consider most important?"
  • "Tell me about a time data changed your decision."
  • "How do you measure the success of a website?"
  • "How would you improve conversion rates?"
  • "How do you identify problems in a customer journey?"

Google Analytics, Search Console, Looker Studio, transaction data, CSAT, conversion and payment-failure analysis.

6. Stakeholder management

  • "Tell me about a difficult stakeholder you managed."
  • "How do you manage competing stakeholder expectations?"
  • "How do you communicate technical issues to non-technical stakeholders?"
  • "Tell me about a time you had to negotiate priorities."
  • "How do you get different departments aligned?"

Your experience coordinating Business, UX, Development, Legal, InfoSec, Network and other teams is particularly useful here.

7. Project & delivery management

Possible questions:

  • "Tell me about a project you managed from beginning to end."
  • "How do you manage project risks?"
  • "How do you ensure projects are delivered on time?"
  • "What do you do when a project is behind schedule?"
  • "How do you prioritize development requests?"
  • "How do you manage UAT and release readiness?"

Jira → development → testing → UAT → stakeholder approval → production release process provides strong evidence.

8. Commercial / business questions

For more senior Digital Manager roles, expect questions beyond technology.

  • "How does digital contribute to revenue?"
  • "How do you prioritize initiatives based on business value?"
  • "How do you measure ROI on digital investments?"
  • "How would you improve online conversion?"
  • "How do you manage a digital budget?"
  • "How do you forecast digital expenditure?"
  • "How do you balance customer experience with commercial objectives?"

This is an area I'd particularly prepare if the job description mentions budget, P&L, revenue or commercial accountability.

9. Situational / hypothetical questions

These are different from STAR questions.

You may be asked: "You discover that the website conversion rate has suddenly dropped by 20%. What would you do?"

A good response would be: Validate → Diagnose → Prioritize → Act → Measure

For example:

  • Validate the data and confirm the drop is genuine.
  • Check analytics implementation and tracking.
  • Identify where the funnel changed.
  • Check technical issues, payment failures and recent releases.
  • Segment by device, market, product and traffic source.
  • Work with technical/business teams to identify root cause.
  • Implement the fix.
  • Monitor conversion after the change.

That's a very strong Digital Manager-style answer.

10. Motivation & culture questions

You may also get straightforward questions:

  • "Why are you interested in this position?"
  • "Why do you want to join our company?"
  • "Why are you looking for a new opportunity?"
  • "What are your strengths?"
  • "What is your biggest weakness?"
  • "Where do you see yourself in five years?"
  • "What motivates you?"

Don't underestimate these. They can be used to determine whether your career goals align with the role.

One important difference from Sapia

With Sapia, you are primarily dealing with a text conversation.

With HireVue, depending on the employer's setup, you may have a video interview where you see a question and have a limited amount of time to prepare before recording your answer.

So your preparation should include speaking, not just writing.

A typical experience could be:

  • Question appears
  • 30 seconds–1 minute preparation
  • 1–3 minute recorded response
  • Next question

The exact timing and number of attempts are determined by the employer's configuration.

Example questions for a Digital Manager:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Why are you interested in this Digital Manager role?
  • Tell me about a digital transformation project you led.
  • Tell me about a difficult stakeholder you managed.
  • Tell me about a time you improved customer experience.
  • Tell me about a challenging digital problem you solved.
  • How do you prioritize competing digital initiatives?
  • How do you measure digital success?
  • Tell me about a time you used data to make a decision.
  • Tell me about a project that didn't go according to plan.
  • How do you manage cross-functional teams?
  • Tell me about a time you introduced or migrated to a new technology/platform.
  • How would you improve an underperforming digital conversion funnel?
  • How do you manage digital budgets and forecast accuracy?
  • What would be your priorities in your first 90 days as Digital Manager?

Example projects:

  • CMS migration → Digital Transformation
  • Subscription journey → Customer Experience
  • Payment journey → Conversion / Problem Solving
  • Analytics & Search Console → Data-driven decisions
  • Jira/UAT/releases → Project Management
  • Business + UX + Dev + InfoSec + Legal → Stakeholder Management
  • Website ownership → Digital Strategy
  • Budget/vendor/invoice management → Commercial/Financial Management
