RICE Framework: A Data-Driven Prioritization Model for Better Business Decisions

The RICE Framework is a product prioritization method that helps teams evaluate and rank ideas, features, or projects based on their expected impact relative to the effort required. It was developed by Intercom.

What is the RICE Framework?

RICE stands for:

  • R – Reach
  • I – Impact
  • C – Confidence
  • E – Effort

The framework calculates a RICE Score to prioritize initiatives.

Formula

RICE Score = (Reach × Impact ×Confidence) / Effort



The Four Components

Reach

How many users or customers will be affected in a given time period?

Impact

How much value will each affected user receive?

High = 3, Medium = 2, Low = 1

or (Massive - 3, High - 2, Medium - 1, Low - 0.5, Minimal - 0.25)

Confidence

How certain are you about your estimates?

100%, 80%, 50%


Effort

Total work required (usually person-months or person-weeks)

Example

Suppose you're deciding whether to redesign your website checkout.

  • Reach 10,000 users/month
  • Impact 2
  • Confidence 80% (0.8)
  • Effort 4 person-months

Calculation: (10,000×2×0.8) / 4 = 4,000 RICE Score

You can compare this score against other initiatives—the higher the score, the higher the priority.
